Another
Great Dirt Trackin' Show in 2011
Another Dirt Trackin' race car show has now been completed at the York
Expo Center. With this year's show being held a few weeks
earlier than most, the count of racing vehicles was down a little bit,
because many teams just weren't quite ready in time. Still
there were exactly 100 race vehicles in attendance, plus a few street
cars, and two Speedway pace trucks.
As always the Dirt Trackin' show offered special awards to racers that
were judged "Best in show", and also to the "People's Choice " winners.
The "People's Choice" awards sponsored by the Jack Giambalvo Motor
Companies of York, are judged by fans attending the show.
Fans voted by placing money in a large plastic containers that
were numbered and placed in front of each display. The money
is then donated to the York County Racing Club's Injured Driver's
Fund. This year $2079.68 was collected during the voting.
The top "People's Choice" award went to youngster DeShawn Gingerich of
Dover, and his go-kart #0. Gingerich was one happy little kid
when the results were announced. Second place went to the
modified of Daryl Dissinger, while the micro sprint of young Jacob
Moose placed third. Travis McClelland's limited late model,
and Spring Grove's Zach Eucalano's sprint car completed the top five.
In the "Best of Show" judging, Frankie Herr's super sportsman racer was
the winner in the open wheel class. Manchester's Randy
Christine Jr. Won the award for the late models, while the stock car
class award went to Charlie Pensinger's pure stock. In the
small car class, York's Lucas Montgomery's Legends car was the winner,
while Dissinger's modified won the miscellaneous award. In
the restore class the winner was the early 1970's era super sportsman
#9 that had been owned by the Wolfe Brothers and driven by Fred Putney
Sr. John and Nancy Miller now own this machine.
As always a number of drivers were on hand during the weekend, and
several announced plans for the new season. Most folks on
hand could note that York's Steve Storrie had two cars on
display. One was his own 358 sprint car, while the other was
a wingless 410 sprint car owned by Clair Wintermyer.
The car Zach Eucalano had on hand was a 410 sprint car.
Talking with Eucalano's grandfather Larry Shive, he noted that the team
plans to start the season with the 410's at Lincoln, but will move to
the 358 class again when Trailway opens it's season. Eucalano
will then compete in selected 410 events during the rest of the year,
while running the 358 schedule at Trailway.
Lady racer Nicole Bower had her sprint car on hand, and will be
competing full time with the 410 sprints this season at Port Royal.
While his car was not at the show, Chad Criswell noted that he will be
competing full time with the 410 sprint cars this season at
Lincoln. Former car owner Hal Bitner is helping the Criswell
team.
Jaynee Zeigler of Thomasville was crowned Ms. Dirt Trackin' 2011 at the
Friday night contest sponsored by CarSoup.com. She is not only a very
beautiful and witty young lady, but racers herself regularly on
Saturday nights.
The Race 2 A Cure Team that had a beautiful modified display at the
show raised over $800 for Breast Cancer Awareness through it's Saturday
afternoon auction at the show headed up by car
owner/driver Daryl Dissinger. A one dollar donation also gave
the supporter the opportunity to sign the inside of the hauler with
well wishers and words of hope, that will ride with the team all year
long.
Plans are already underway for the 2012 edition, with show promoter
Kirk Wise stating that he will be attempting to move the show to a
later date, while still staying at the York Fairgrounds Expo Center
facility if scheduling allows. Several ideas in the works will also
include the lowering of admission prices for next year, the
reintroduction of classic car displays, as well as the addition of
scheduled driver autograph sessions and the possibility of seminars for
younger drivers by some of the seasoned veterans and product
representatives.
All in all, the show had a lot to offer this year with musical
entertainment from young Country singer Leah Burkey, to the Jazz Me
Band, as well as the SWO wrestlers and a trio of characters roaming the
show including the Rifes Racing Shark, the Klines Enzyme, and Red
Robin, as well as over 120 vendors, but the car count needed to be
higher for the real racing enthusiast to be satisfied completely with
the experience. Hopefully the date change will permit teams
the time needed to ready their sponsor adorned cars, so that
they will be able to participate in the show for 2012.
